Our Story

The Church of Christ that is now located on 108 Callahan Street was established by Bro. Elonzo Jones of Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1934.  At that time, there was not a Black Church of Christ in the Rome area.  Bro. Elonzo Jones held many tent meetings preaching and teaching the Gospel, and from these meetings many souls were baptized.  Because there was not a building at that time, they held Bible classes and worshipped on Sundays in the homes.  They had brothers come from Atlanta, Georgia to preach and teach.  By 1950, the church had grown and it became very necessary to have a building.  The members started a building fund. Enough money was raised to purchase a lot on Graham Street and a church building was erected in September 1951.  However, this area was found to be very unsuitable.

In August of 1952, another lot was purchased at the corner of East 14th and Flannery Streets.  In February 1953, the East 14th Street church was erected and was known as the “East 14th Street Church of Christ.  The church began to grow and with financial assistance from the Fifth Avenue Congregation in October 1958, East 14th Street Church of Christ was able to support its first full time minister, Bro. William S. Bradley.  As the Church grew, there was a need for a much larger facility.  In 1977, the building on Callahan Street was purchased.  Today it is known as the Callahan Street Church of Christ, 108 Callahan Street, Rome, Georgia.
